In a modest hut made of cement and worn wood—weathered by years of heat and rain—Lawrance lives a quiet and simple life in the Chengalpattu district. Inside, there is very little: just a mat, a few vessels, and the few belongings of a man who has learned to live with less.
Yet even within those humble walls, there is something far greater: quiet strength, deep perseverance, and a faith that has carried him through life’s hardest seasons.
A Life That Once Looked Very Different
Before illness touched his body, Lawrance worked long days in the fields from sunrise to sunset. He was known as a hardworking man, willing to do whatever was needed—lifting, digging, building, and taking on labor that demanded endurance.
He did not earn much, but what he earned gave him food, purpose, and the dignity of providing for himself. His life was simple, but it was steady.
Then leprosy entered his life, and slowly everything began to change.

When Illness Brought Isolation
The disease did not only affect his health. It also changed how others responded to him.
The work that once sustained him began to disappear. People who once spoke with familiarity began to keep their distance. The routines and relationships that once grounded his life slowly faded, leaving silence, limitation, and loss.
Like so many who suffer under both illness and stigma, Lawrance found himself pushed to the margins.
And yet, even in hardship, he held tightly to one thing: his dignity.
A Prayer for Daily Provision
Rather than giving in to despair, Lawrance chose to live quietly with what little he had. He would not beg. Day after day, he continued with humble steadiness, trusting God to sustain him.
When Embrace a Village met Lawrance more than two decades ago, he was praying for something simple yet deeply important: a regular supply of rice so he could have daily food without losing his dignity.
That prayer was answered.
Through the consistent care of Embrace a Village—and through the faithful generosity and prayers of supporters—this provision has continued month after month, year after year.
More Than Rice
Each visit brings more than rice.
It brings stability.
It brings relief.
It brings the quiet reassurance that he has not been forgotten.
When his name is called, Lawrance’s face still lights up. What is placed into his hands is more than food—it is dignity preserved, hope sustained, and the reminder that someone continues to care enough to show up.
For Lawrance, that monthly rice has become a lifeline. It means he does not face hunger alone. It means he can continue living with the dignity he has held onto so faithfully.
Because of Compassion
Lawrance’s story is a reflection of what steady compassion can do.
