Velupillai’s Story: Restoring Dignity, One Step at a Time

Stories

For 67-year-old Velupillai, walking was once a daily struggle.

Living in a small, remote village in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, he faced unbearable pain from the deep ulcers left by leprosy. The feeling in his feet was long gone, and every stone, every stretch of hot ground, became a new wound.

Traveling to the city for special footwear was impossible. His frail body couldn’t endure the distance. So, he resigned himself to a life of pain.

When Hope Came Rolling In

When he stood and took his first comfortable steps, tears and laughter filled his eyes.

Then one day, the Embrace a Village mobile shoe van rolled into his community—bringing healing right to his doorstep.

Our team gently measured Velupillai’s feet and fitted him with custom-made MCR shoes, designed to protect the insensitive feet of leprosy patients from injury and ulceration.

Those shoes meant more than protection.
They were symbols of dignity, care, and love.

And they came without him needing to travel anywhere—because Embrace a Village goes where others cannot.

Velupillai smiles with relief after receiving his new custom-made MCR shoes from the Embrace a Village mobile shoe van—each step now a reminder of dignity and care delivered right to his doorstep.

A Blessing for Many

Velupillai wasn’t alone. Other leprosy-affected individuals in his village received shoes too—each pair a simple but profound reminder that they are not forgotten.

Through the MCR shoe project and our mobile van, Embrace a Village continues to bring compassion to doorsteps—protecting vulnerable feet, restoring dignity, and giving back the simple gift of walking without pain.
