From Cursed to Chosen: Doraiswami’s Journey to Dignity

Stories

When Doraiswami was just 18, life changed forever. Diagnosed with leprosy in his small village near Coimbatore, he wasn’t met with care or compassion—he was met with fear. Friends drifted away. Family kept their distance. In an instant, his world fell silent.

As the years passed, the disease left its mark—curled fingers, ulcerated feet, and a body weary from walking from village to village. He searched for acceptance, for survival, for a place to simply be.

By the time he turned 68, Doraiswami had nothing left—no home, no income, and no one who called him by name. Forgotten by the world, he was slowly fading.

The Day Everything Changed

That’s when Embrace a Village found him.

Doraiswami was brought to our hospice in Coimbatore—a place where the forgotten are remembered, the lonely are embraced, and healing extends far beyond the physical.

Here, he was lovingly bathed, fed nourishing meals, given clean clothes, and provided with a soft bed to rest. But the greatest gift was something he had lost long ago: dignity.

Our staff listened to his stories and called him Anna—elder brother—a name of respect and belonging. For the first time in decades, Doraiswami felt like family.

At 68, Doraiswami arrived at the Embrace a Village hospice after decades of living in isolation. Today, he enjoys community, respect, and compassionate care.

A Transformation Made Possible by You

Today, Doraiswami smiles often. He laughs with friends. He greets visitors with a sparkle in his eyes. And recently, he said something that moved us all:

“For so long, I thought I was cursed… but now, I feel like I’ve been chosen—for love, for care, for peace in my final years.”

This transformation—this restoration of dignity—happens because of you.
