For most people, a pair of shoes is just a daily necessity. But for Velu, they became the key to walking without pain—and to reclaiming his dignity.
Velu, now 70 years old, was diagnosed with leprosy at 35. For years, he worked in a small provision shop to support his wife and four children. As the children grew up and started their own lives in different parts of Tamil Nadu, Velu and his wife were left alone to face the ongoing challenges leprosy left behind.
One of those challenges was walking.
An ulcer on his right foot made every step excruciating. Without proper footwear, his wounds worsened daily. Unable to afford the custom MCR (Micro Cellular Rubber) shoes designed for leprosy-affected feet, Velu did the only thing he could—wrap his feet in cloth and bear the pain in silence.
